What this estimator is for

If you owe the IRS, even a small monthly payment can help you feel more organized. This tool is meant to help you think through a payment that may fit your budget before you talk with a professional.

It is general information only. TaxCairn is a free matching service, not a law firm, and this tool does not give legal or tax advice. Real payment options depend on your income, expenses, debts, the amount owed, and your state.

If you want help from a tax attorney or tax-resolution professional, you can get matched after you review your estimate.

How to use the estimate

Start with your monthly take-home income, then list your basic living costs such as housing, food, transportation, childcare, and health care. Subtract those costs to see what may be left for tax debt.

The IRS may allow an installment agreement, which is a monthly payment plan. In some cases, the starting payment can be around $25 per month, but the real amount depends on what you owe and your financial situation. State tax agencies may have different rules.

This tool does not collect financial-account numbers, tax returns, or immigration documents. It is only for contact intent and basic planning.

What the estimate does not do

This estimator cannot tell you whether the IRS will accept a payment plan, an Offer in Compromise, or another option. An Offer in Compromise is a request to settle for less than the full amount owed, and the application fee is usually a few hundred dollars unless waived, but approval is not guaranteed.

It also does not replace a review of IRS notices, wage garnishment, a bank levy, or a lien. A lien is a legal claim the IRS puts on your property. A levy is when the IRS actually takes money or property.

If you have an audit notice, unfiled returns, or a more complicated situation, a professional can help you understand the next step.

If your number feels too high

That is common. Many people need a second opinion before they decide what to do, especially when they are stressed or reading IRS letters in a second language.

Professional help for tax debt often ranges from about $1,500 to $5,000 flat fee for many cases, and more for complex matters. The real cost depends on the case, the amount owed, the firm, and the state.

TaxCairn is free for people seeking help. Participating professionals pay us a flat fee to be matched, not a share of their fee.

Language and immigration questions

You can often get help in your own language, and that can make it easier to understand IRS notices and your options. Filing taxes is separate from immigration status, and many people can file with an ITIN.

If you are unsure what an IRS letter means, or if you want help talking through your options calmly, we can point you to the right kind of professional through our services or get matched.

You do not need to bring documents to start. A short description of your situation is enough to begin.

Common questions

Does this estimator tell me exactly what I will pay each month?

No. It gives a rough planning estimate only. The IRS, a state tax agency, or a professional may use different information to decide the real payment amount.

Can I use this if I do not have an SSN or I am not sure about my immigration status?

Yes. This page is for general planning and does not ask for an SSN, ITIN, or documents. Filing taxes is separate from immigration status, and many people can file with an ITIN.

What if I cannot afford much each month?

That is common. Some people may qualify for a low monthly installment agreement, but the IRS reviews each case separately. A tax professional can help you understand whether a payment plan or another option may fit your situation.

Will TaxCairn tell me if I qualify for debt relief?

No. TaxCairn is a free matching service, not a law firm, and it does not make eligibility decisions. It helps you understand the basics and connect with a professional who can review your situation.
